What is a pall?

A pall is used in the liturgy of the Mass. It is a stiff, square piece of linen placed over the chalice in order to prevent impurities from falling in it.  Palls are embroidered with a large center cross and sometimes decorated with embroidery.  Traditionally palls are made of pure linen.
'She makes fine linen and sells it in the marketplace'
(Proverbs 31:24)
